Sustainable Lean Construction
Infrastructure projects play a crucial role in driving economic growth and development in India. The country has witnessed a significant focus on infrastructure development in the past two decades, and the trend is expected to continue in future.
However, according to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI), time and cost overruns distressing major infrastructure projects led to financial impact of Rs. 4.5 trillion as of December 2022. This has an impact on both the productivity and the profitability of such projects.
Given this context, it has been found that the successful implementation of Lean principles has benefitted organizations significantly. Further, with the industry moving towards prefabrication and digitization, Lean-integrated digital tools have the potential to manage resources in an optimum manner without compromising on time, cost and quality.
However, there is a need to bring Lean awareness to construction corporates, government contract companies and stakeholders in the academic and research domains. This is because studies have also indicated that only under 10% of Lean implementation initiatives have actually been successful.
